The "Coca-Cola Route": An overview

The Marangu Route, famously known as the "Coca-Cola Route," is the oldest and most established trekking path on Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers a total distance of approximately 72 km (45 miles) round trip. While a standard duration of 5 days is offered, we highly recommend a 6-day trek for better acclimatization and a higher chance of success.

Route details and accommodations

Your journey begins at Marangu Gate (1,870 m / 6,135 ft). Along the way, you'll stay in comfortable A-frame wooden huts at Mandara Huts, the largest camp at Horombo Huts accommodating up to 120 trekkers, and stone-built huts at Kibo Huts, located at the base of the summit cone. All camps provide solar-powered lighting and basic platform toilets. You'll even find soft drinks (hence the nickname) and beer often sold at camp offices, adding a unique touch of comfort to your adventure.

Who is the Marangu Route for?

The Marangu Route is ideal for first-time climbers or those seeking a more comfortable trekking experience. Its hut accommodations mean you don't need to carry tents. However, proper acclimatization is key. Many failures on this route stem from not taking the extra day at Horombo Hut, which is vital for adjusting to the altitude. While you get the comfort of a mattress and a roof over your head, you might miss out on the varied landscapes found on routes like Machame or Lemosho, which offer diverse descent paths.
